Introduction: Narcolepsy is a rare sleep disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness and REM-sleep abnormalities. Lateral hypothalamic hypocretin/orexin neurones are critical for normal wakefulness and energy expenditure, and the reduction of their activity has been linked with narcolepsy.
